For our first unit we are covering the basic skills needed for a career in costume. The unit is split into two; Construction and design. I have been doing the design half and today I completed my first CAD design. We were taught the basics of creating a design using Photo Shop, then scanned in a line drawing design and coloured it digitally. We were then shown how we can present them in a professional manner. I was pleasantly surprised how well I could follow the instructions and I am very pleased with the resulting piece, especially for a first try.
For our first week at uni we were split into 3 groups and we did 3 different induction projects for the week. My group was commissioned to do an art piece for an exhibition called Drawing In Stitch. We could do practically anything as long as it showed stitching and was linked to costume. I did a character board for Snow White incorporating my 2 favourite versions; the 1937 Disney animated film and ABC's TV series Once Upon A Time. I traced the images from pictures I'd found online and then traced them onto calico using back stitch through the tracing paper. Once I'd completed the drawing I ripped the tracing paper from under the stitching. I was quite pleased with the result as it was the first piece of embroidery I have done.
