This is our theory unit, and our first tasks were to produce a production journal with research on 5 shows we've seen, and a 750 word Performance analysis one on of these shows. We also had to complete a 1000 word Book report on a chapter in Counsell and Wolfe 'Performance Analysis; An Introductory Coursebook' (I chose the 'polotics of performance') and a 2000 word essay on our chosen chapter demonstrated in performance (I chose how ideology is shown in period drama through gender roles). I found it very educational seeing the shows as they were different from any style I'd seen before, and coupled with our lectures on theatrical technique and theory this really helped my understanding. After each performance I would either discuss what we've seen with a classmate or write notes so I wouldn't forget, then later on produce a page on the play in my journal. I gave each play a background to demonstrate the mood/theme of the play, then included production photos and research, all this I then referenced. After I'd researched all 5 plays, I chose one and completed my essays, then made a bibliography to put at the end.
As part of our Core skills making unit we learnt the processes in making a bodice, including a false back to use at fittings. We made a miniature half bodice sample to learn things like bias bindings, facings, how and where to use the stitches and seams we'd also learnt and how to work with steel boning, which I'd never done before. Though I find making more challenging than design I really learnt a lot and it will definitely help me with both making and designing.
